About the Colorado SOMB (For Clients & Families)

Clear guidance on what the Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB) is and what to expect in Colorado.

What is the SOMB?

The Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB) sets statewide rules (“standards”) for how evaluations, treatment, supervision, and monitoring are done for people with sexual-offense cases in Colorado. Courts, probation, parole, and providers follow these standards to increase community safety and support successful outcomes.

Why does this matter to me?

  • Consistency: Your evaluation and treatment follow the same rules statewide.
  • Safety + Support: Standards aim to reduce risk and help you build a prosocial life.
  • Approved providers only: Courts and probation require SOMB-approved professionals.

What to expect with an evaluation

  • Interview: Background, health, education/work, relationships, strengths, and goals.
  • Records review: Police reports, court orders, prior evaluations if available.
  • Screenings/tests (as appropriate): Standardized tools used under SOMB guidelines.
  • Recommendations: Risk-informed plan for treatment, supervision, and monitoring.

Tip: Bring your current court/probation paperwork and contact details for your officer/attorney.

What treatment looks like

  • Group and/or individual sessions focused on skills, accountability, and healthy living.
  • Goal-oriented: We target risk factors and build protective factors (support, stability, coping).
  • Progress is earned: Movement through phases depends on demonstrated change and compliance.

Privacy and boundaries

  • Confidentiality with limits: We follow laws and court orders. Safety concerns and supervision conditions can require sharing certain information with probation/parole/courts.
  • Language access: Interpreters are available. Tell us your preferred language.
  • Accessibility: We provide reasonable accommodations. Please let us know what you need.
FAQ: Common Questions

Is SOMB treatment “one size fits all”?
No. Standards guide care, but your plan is individualized to your needs and risk profile.

Do I have to use an SOMB-approved provider?
Yes, when ordered by the court or required by probation/parole.

Will my family be involved?
With your permission and when clinically appropriate, we can include family education and support.

What happens if I miss sessions?
Attendance is part of compliance. Missed sessions may affect your status with treatment and supervision. Communicate early if issues arise.
